Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center - Who We Are
Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center has been serving the greater Harrisburg region with high-quality, ethically guided and patient-focused health care services since 1963. This 307-bed community hospital in East Pennsboro Township provides outpatient and inpatient diagnostic, medical and surgical services. Holy Spirit Medical Center joined Penn State Health in 2020.
Nationally accredited for its centers of excellence in cardiac care, atrial fibrillation, heart attack (STEMI), heart failure, stroke, diabetes and knee and hip replacement, Holy Spirit Medical Center is also certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association.
Its Level II Trauma Center provides around-the-clock complex critical care for people with life-threatening injuries.

Our Story
The Sisters of Christian Charity established Holy Spirit Hospital in 1963 to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all in need. In 1972, Holy Spirit Hospital opened a community mental health center, offering inpatient psychiatric care. Four years later, it opened a family health center in Dillsburg, the first of dozens of Holy Spirit outpatient practices in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York counties.
In 2003, Holy Spirit completed the Ortenzio Heart Center, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of heart problems. Holy Spirit Health System signed a letter of intent with Geisinger Health System in 2013 and became Geisinger Holy Spirit in 2014. After joining Penn State Health in 2020, it was then renamed Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center.

Quality Awards
Over the years, Holy Spirit Medical Center has earned American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) honors for our commitment to providing evidence-based heart and stroke care.
We are certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, and we earned Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care from The Joint Commission. We are accredited as a Chest Pain Center (primary PCI with resuscitation) by the American College of Cardiology.
Holy Spirit Medical Center earned Highmark Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center+ designation for cardiac care and knee and hip replacement. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community.
We've earned the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) which recognizes our commitment to providing positive experiences for the older adults in our care.
